Review
Before we reflect on the LG "Chocolate" designation, the novel design given to the KG800 is different from anything we have seen before. It has an innovative touch keyboard navigation, which is inactive when the phone is closed and locked, but vibrantly lights red when you drag the screen. Otherwise, you can access these keys by opening the phone with two presses of the volume key when it slipped closed.
There are nine total tactile buttons: two customizable shortcut keys below the screen, keyboard and call to cancel, four nav-key, and a selection button. We continue to applaud LG for their new approach to the design of chocolate.
So why chocolate? LG says "chocolate" is their name for the pet phone and they thought it was time for a phone is out with a name that is easy for people to remember. Before looking at the phone we thought it might be because of his colour, but there is no hint of brown on the phone. The high-gloss, black case with silver detail, is prone to smudges and fingerprints. LG provides a small cloth for polishing in the case that you can attach to the upper right corner of the phone, but we found that it was easier to give the just cause a quick rub on our jeans or shirts from time to time for a Buff.
Most people who have given us an opinion about the Chocolate seemed very impressed by its design and surprised to see the quirky operation of the keyboard. Other comments that it looked quite plasticky compared to what they thought it would look like. Each to their own when it comes to fashion phones, we guess.
Other phone features include a black and gray checkered keyboard, MP3 player and camera shortcuts on the side, and a USB port that serves the headset and power connections - you can not listen to music while charging on the phone. It is a rather petitie phone, measuring 95 x 48 x 15mm and weighing 83 grams.
This is certainly a case of style over substance with the phone LG Chocolate, although there are some mid-range features on board.
Highlights - Multimedia is a 1.3-megapixel camera, video recorder, MP3/AAC player and a fairly brilliant 2-inch 256 K color TFT (176 x 220 pixels).
MP3 files can be set as ringtones and LG pre-installs a range of polyphonic tones. Passengers will benefit from the Chocolates tri-band connectivity, but real globetrotters benefit more from Motorola RAZR V3i quad-band.
The KG800 is limited by its 128 MB of internal memory, expansion slot for external memory card. Yet with embedded Bluetooth technology and LG bundling a USB cable in the box, it is easy to download your photos and video clips before running out of memory.
Look for later, the glowing navigation keys are a bit awkward because of their sensitivity. Training yourself out of the habit of pushing buttons feels a little strange at first but LG includes a couple of audio hints so that whenever you press a key, the chocolate produced a typewriter or audible acoustic piano, a chime or a deviation. You can disable this feature, but we like the pitch variation produce different keys.
Touch the keys to activate when the display backlighting, which can be set at 10, 20, 30 or 60 seconds. Then you have to hit a button or a digital side key to illuminate the display and use the navigation again. Or you can simply close and reopen the cursor.
LG says KG800 Chocolate is good for 2 hours of talk time or 200 hours of standby. With Bluetooth switched on and average use of the phone for voice calls and SMS, we found the Chocolate battery lasted for about two or three days.
The KG800 Chocolate is the first phone LG bonus Black Label Series of mobile phones. Although no release date has been specified for future models, LG has hinted that there could be a Chocolate 3G in the works, among others.
If your thumbs are not too big, you have no fingerprints and your spirit can not live without the top geek features, we would not hesitate to recommend the Chocolate KG800.
