Review

The Nokia XpressMusic 5310 is a great phone, which takes a standard format with a high caliber specification.

Most mobile phones make an attempt at music these days, and some do the job very well, so to style a range specifically focused on music raises expectations somewhat. The XpressMusic range so far has not managed to reach these heightened expectations.

Where the Nokia 5310 XpressMusic scores over its fore runners is not in a having better music player than any other mobile, but being very pleasing to the eye and a well-designed phone.

The black, red and gray is really quite striking. You could go navy in place of crimson, but it is an option which is much less flashy and does not do justice on the side of the bars in my opinion.

The left edges in crimson houses music control buttons, which are marked by flashing red. This concept of a panel of colours for the buttons mounted screenside for music is the one which runs through the range of XpressMusic phones, but it has never been so well implemented as here, thanks to the metallic sheen of the crimson, and the fact that this is a slim mobile phone.

The dimensions of 104mm x 45mm, may not impress those used to very similar sized candybar phones, but at 9.9 mm thick the 5310 is impressively slender. It is als very light at 71g.

The default theme of black, red and white looks good on the 320 x 240 pixels, 16 million colour, 2.0-inch screen and the minor keys on the keypad are individually shaped curved upwards and their centres, which makes them easy to use at speed. The navigation pad is relatively low, but it is curved inward, toward the selection key, so that its use is not too difficult.

The OS is a Symbian S40, it does not possess all the features that smartphone S60 mobiles have. It has a calendar, messaging and mobile support for web browser software.

Use the Web icon on the menu screen and you are directed to the S40 browser, which is of very average quality. Immerse yourself in the Apps folder, and then into a folder called 'Collection' and you will find Opera Mini, which is a much better browser.

The phone can synchronize data with your PC and you get the USB cable and the software required for this task.

There is an FM radio, and you can use the side mounted music control buttons to flip through stations. The software for the radio can produce a library of stations automatically for you in a few seconds on this phone.

The memory capacity is limited to just 30 MB, but a microSD card offers a 2 GB expansion to give you a pretty good amount of storage space. Cards are located in a slot on the right side of the phone, but you must remove the battery cover to access it.

Audio playback quality was alright via Nokias earphones. You must use the telephone end section if you want to listen to the radio because it contains the antenna. It has a 3.5mm connector past the microphone if you want to use your own headphones. You can use your own headphones at the end of phone if you do not need an FM radio,.

Battery life is quite good. Eight and a half hours of non-stop music from a microSD card from a full charge.

The camera is a story which is less positive. It has 2 megapixels, which is average. It lacks autofocus, flash or mirror, framing pictures and your subject often very blurred on the screen. The images themselves are disappointing.

It can be a real embarrassment when your mobile is so obviously a great design with very poor features. This is that phone.
