Review
If there is one thing that Samsung can do really well its very thin phones crammed with a lot of features. This time they have shoe horned in a 5-megapixel camera into a case width of only 15mm, thats 6mm slimmer than the Nokia N95, the only other 5-megapixel camera phone available at the moment.
The G600 is not the most revolutionary phone in the world and sticks very close to Samsungs traditional telephone layout. It's not ugly, but it does not have the wow factor of slider phones such as the Chocolate or LG Shine.
It comes in a rather tame two-tone gray box that keeps it in line with others from Samsung presenting a generally serious aesthetic. What will impress you, given its features, is how it is thin, measuring just 15mm.
The G600 feels good to hold and use. Its screen is big enough to see without squinting, there are no annoying touch-sensitive keys for the inadvertent pressing and the keyboard is usable. The camera at the rear is also well protected behind the slide.
The G600's 5-megapixel camera is by far its star feature, which is probably why Samsung has decided to keep it protected behind the slide mechanism. You can only use it by opening the phone, then pressing the shutter button dedicated to the side.
Press the shutter button slowly in camera mode activates the autofocus, which takes a little time to get used to since it is very sensitive. The camera lets you adjust a variety of parameters, including image size and flash mode.
The G600 is unfortunately using the LED flash photo light that does not illuminate as well as a xenon flash, like that found on the Sony Ericsson K810i. You can whack up to ISO 800, but the shots leaving you with a lot of grain. In addition to taking pictures, you can also use the G600 to shoot video.
The G600 is the complete music player, supporting a variety of formats, including MP3 and AAC. You can set your music to shuffle mode, and listen by using headphones or stereo wirelessly via Bluetooth.
Other features include an FM radio, a microSD expansion slot that can support up to 2 GB and a Google search bar that allows you to access Google directly without going through the browser - useful if you are looking for something quickly.
If you have a choice between the phone and the Nokia N95, which also has a camera of 5 megapixels, it is useful to keep in mind that the N95 has HSDPA (3.5G), Wi-Fi and integrated GPS. It should be noted, however, that this camera phone pocket fit is much nicer, even if it's a shame it is not 3G.
The quality of calls on the G600 was very good - it's something notable Samsung takes very seriously. Calls rang out loud and clear, but the speaker has been relatively quiet and could have been much stronger.
The image quality of the camera was good and when it became clear that 5-megapixel sensor is not as good without a camera stand to support it, the shots were fairly clear and crisp for prints of larger formats. Unfortunately, in low-light images are not as clear because of the absence of a genuine flash.
Battery life is good for more than two days, although it will be depleted quickly if you use the camera a lot.
The G600 brilliantly executed the camera compared to the majority of camera phones currently on the market, while the Sony Ericsson K810i edges with his best flash. However, if you are looking for a good camera with the 3G and Wi-Fi, the Nokia N95 is definitely the handset to check out.
Overall, Samsung has produced a slim phone bursting with features - even though we would have liked to have seen the incorporation of 3G, the phone is a pleasure to carry and use.
